Top 5 Reasons to Choose “The Boardwalk” Bridge

Boardwalk Bridge

The allure of wandering along a beautiful boardwalk with family and friends in tow will never get old. Whether you are constructing a pathway to access beaches, wetlands, forests or conservation areas, the boardwalk bridge is the ideal choice for your project. A boardwalk is typically used for crossing shallow water or perhaps even dry land.  They are excellent bridges for use in interpretive and educational facilities in habitat and conservation areas such as wetlands and swamps as well as in trails where people may struggle crossing an otherwise wet or rugged terrain.

Bridge Focus: Our Favourite Bridge in Canada

Our Favourite Bridge in Canada

It is no surprise that we are fascinated by the beauty and engineering genius of bridges around the world. Our absolute favourite bridge hovers over the Capilano River in beautiful British Colombia. A day-trip to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in Vancouver will literally transport you to paradise. The brilliantly engineered bridge, built in 1889, rises 230 feet above a deep and steep canyon that encompasses the Capilano River. Surrounded in all four directions by breathtaking trees, plants and flora and fauna that expands into a seemingly never ending 27 acre rainforest, this is the kind of bridge we wish we had of built ourselves. Instead, we decided to join the other 800,000 visitors each year and simply marvel in its beauty and enjoy a wide-eyed, jaw-dropping walk across the 450 foot bridge.
The Suspension Bridge was originally constructed by the famous Scottish civil engineer and land developer, George Grant Mackay. Imagine that in those early days, the bridge was suspended using hemp rope and simple cedar plants and hosted a simple cabin that became the popular meeting place for the designer and his pals. By the time of his death in 1903, the rustic rope bridge was replaced with a far more secure wire cable bridge. The ownership of the bridge passed hands numerous times until 1953 when Rae Mitchell completely rebuilt the bridge, adding trails, a trading post and bookmarking the wire cables with concrete walls.
Fast forward to the present day, the Capilano Suspension Bridge is now owned by Rae Mitchells daughter, Nancy Stibbard and is celebrated in the Canadian Tourism Hall of Fame. It is so strong and stable that it could hold 97 elephants, 203 moose or 4520 beavers![1] The bridge remains constructed of wire cable but if you are lucky enough to visit in during the holidays, it is decorated with thousands of glittering lights that illuminate its incredible beautify at night.

Stay tuned to our blog for many more bridge features. What’s your favourite bridge in Canada? Post your thoughts or photos in the comments below. If you are looking for help to design and install a bridge on your property, contact our team today for help.

Affordable and Accessible

There are many variables which determine the amount of capital spending required to buy a bridge – primarily length, width, loading requirements and guard rail specifications. Beyond the initial capital outlay for the bridge, the other considerations are installation costs, annual maintenance costs and life-cycle replacement costs. Compared to any alternative which uses wood or steel, our bridges offer the lowest cost and best value when all these costs are factored in.

Sustainability

Bridge Focus: Brooklyn Bridge

Bridges in the News – Brooklyn Bridge

There are more than 2,000 bridges in and around New York City. Some, of course, are better known — and more expensive — than others.

Brooklyn Bridge: The Eighth Wonder of the World

When the Brooklyn Bridge opened in May of 1883, it was an engineering achievement dubbed “The Eighth Wonder of the World,”.

The notorious and corrupt Boss Tweed — the man who opposed the creation of the early pneumatic subway system — loved the idea of a bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn, which were still two different cities back then. In fact, he was so interested that he racked up $65,000 of bribes to get the $1.5 million of bonds issued to back the massive undertaking.

Of course, Tweed wasn’t just involved in the project out of the goodness of his heart — he wanted to skim some money off the top, like he usually did with public works projects. Construction began in 1869, but Tweed was arrested in 1871 — though his devious plans seemed almost a harbinger of bad things to come.

In the course of construction, somewhere between 20 and 30 men died, including the bridge’s designer, John Roebling. After his foot got crushed between pilings and a boat, the German engineer had some toes amputated and later died of tetanus before construction even began. His 32-year-old son took over the job, but later became partially paralyzed from a bad case of the bends — acquired during the dangerous pressurized construction process — and had to let his wife oversee the rest of the construction.

The Brooklyn Bridge, shown here in 2016, claimed between 20 and 30 lives during the construction process in the 1800s.

It was the world’s longest suspension bridge when it opened in 1883, and there was a parade with an hour-long fireworks display to celebrate. Though it’s free today, the Brooklyn Bridge originally cost a penny to cross by foot, a nickel by horse and a dime by wagon.

Parks & Recreation Summit 2016

Parks & Recreation Summit – Dallas, TX – April 13 to 15

Links Bridges will be one of the selected suppliers at the Parks & Recreation Summit in Dallas, TX from April 13 to 15.  This is an event which brings together representatives of 50 major municipalities with 40 carefully selected vendors.

Vendors in attendance are chosen based on the purchasing needs of these key municipalities.  It is a great opportunity to showcase new products for the very important municipal market.

Links Bridges is taking advantage of this opportunity to showcase some new bridge designs which have been developed with the unique needs of this key market segment.  These municipalities each manage public golf courses and all kinds of different recreational park facilities – many of which need bridges.

Links Bridges will also be involved in some of the Summit forums dealing with the needs of municipalities and how vendors can position themselves to make greater contributions.

Chesapeake Hills Golf Club, Calvert County, MD

The Chesapeake Hills Golf Club in Calvert County, MD is this week taking delivery of a new bridge from Links Bridges’ Composite Series.  They will have a 50’ bridge in the style of the bridge known as ‘The Timber’.

This is a simple but beautiful wood finish, flat bridge designed for pedestrian and golf cart traffic.  As is typical of a Links Bridges installation, the bridge will be delivered and installed the same week and will likely be in full use by the weekend.  Look for pictures to follow.

New Guard Rail Designs

Links Bridges has introduced a new Bridge Guard Rail design using a simple ‘post, rail and cable’ system.  This is part of Links Bridges on-going innovation efforts to offer cost-effective, code-compliant guard rail options.  Check out Links Bridges web site for news on new Guard Rail alternatives.

Links Bridges at Golf Industry Show in San Diego – February 11 to 13, 2016

The Links Bridges Team had a great time at the Golf Industry Show in San Diego – February 11 to 13, 2016.  We were thrilled with the quality and volume of traffic checking us out.

We attend these shows as one way to make sure that more people are aware that they have a different and better option for their golf course bridge requirements.  From our perspective, this show was an unqualified success!

Never before have we had the opportunity to interact with so many in the golf industry who have immediate and pending needs for bridges.

This show was also a chance for us to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.  The NGCOA and GCSAA are to be congratulated on the success of this year’s show.
