Why wood decks don't last like they used to
In years past, pressure-treated wood decks could be expected to last 20 years or more. Things have changed. The commercially available wood is no longer harvested from old-growth forests. It comes from “fast-growth plantations” and lacks the density of old-growth wood.
Additionally, some of the more effective preservatives have been banned due to their toxicity. With today's wood, deck lifespan can be as short as 4 to 5 years before it requires replacement. Ask any golf course superintendent in Florida about their wood decks.
Fiberglass never rots. The deck stops being a recurring cost, and the frame underneath stops sitting against wet, rotting boards.
